“In the shadow of His hand He hid me; He made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in His quiver.” -Isaiah 49:2
Created for Power
My little ones are constantly dressing up as superheroes and running around my house: capes in tow, fists clenched, imaginary (and sometimes real) swords drawn, ready to conquer any and everything in their path. It’s awesome. When dressed like batman, my 2 year-old will run up to me, his little face squinched and brows furrowed, and make sure I hear him yell, “I’M STRONG!” I tell him, “Yes, you are!” There’s so much glorious truth behind that innate thing in children that causes them to put on that superhero outfit and run screaming headlong into the fight the against the bad guys.
WE WERE CREATED TO BE POWERFUL, and God wants to make us arrows in His hand: powerful weapons forged in the secret place, launched by Him into the world to advance His kingdom on the earth. His love empowers us to conquer, but do our lives truly reflect this reality?
Are you living empowered in the strength of the One who created you to walk after His likeness or do you find yourself overpowered by life and all it loves to throw your way?
It is God’s desire to bring us deep into the hidden places of His heart of love and from inside the quiver of intimacy with Him, form and fashion us into weapons of love that He can send out into the world – pushing back darkness and expanding His kingdom of light. As a matter of fact, it’s why we were created.
When God made man and woman in the garden, He blessed them and gave them dominion over all creation. They were commissioned right there from the start to advance God’s name and nature on earth through unhindered fellowship with Him and reflection of both His glory and authority. God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Gen. 1:28 NKJV, emphasis added). That word “dominion” is not a passive term. It means “to rule or reign over; to dominate; to take by treading down and prevail against.” God was commissioning the people He created in His image to go not only in His name and nature but also in His authority – to literally take with force the earth for His glory.
Wow. This can be a mind-boggling concept if we haven’t stopped to consider what the world looked like at creation, but God actually commissioned humanity to advance the light of His kingdom in the midst of present darkness before the fall of man. Remember: the serpent (Satan) was present in the garden as a created being when God told Adam and Eve to subdue and prevail against “every living thing that moves on the earth.” So when the serpent came in temptation, God had JUST given man complete right-of-way and all capability to triumph over the very one coming to overtake them! But sadly, instead of coming through victorious by walking true to their created purpose and the words of their God, woman and man followed the voice of rebellion and they, along with all subsequent humanity, became captive to evil itself.
At their first opportunity to conquer darkness in their God-given authority over it, our distant parents heeded the voice of the liar instead of our good Father and in turn, gave the keys of earth’s dominion away to the very one they were created to subdue.
What a sad day. At that point, earth was given over to the “god of this world” and man “fell” from his original created state of perfect fellowship with God as extensions of His nature and likeness. Adam and Eve and every human born on the earth after them then became subject to the name and nature of evil itself instead of the Lord God who made them. “…through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). Hence, every single one of us who are born into this world are born into a state in which we “sin and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Our Restored Mandate
So it’s a good thing Jesus came and accomplished what He did for us!! At the cross with His own blood, Jesus purchased those keys of dominion back, reversing the curse brought to creation at the fall and restoring us BACK to both our created identity and purpose in the Father. Hallelujah! Now, in Christ Jesus, we are NEW CREATIONS, reborn by grace through faith to rule and reign on the earth with Him.
In the Great Commission we all know so well (Matthew 28:18-19), Jesus restores the original mandate God had for humanity at creation and gives us back the keys of DOMINION – to rule and reign with God on the earth: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…”
How much authority? ALL. Given to whom? JESUS. And entrusted where? THE CHURCH – YOU AND ME! Amazing.
Conclusion: in Christ, you are a conqueror. By His grace, you’re the head and not the tail. In Him, you’ve been freely restored back to God’s original intent and purpose for your life: to rule and reign with Him on the earth in all authority. WOW. That means sin, bondage and any darkness or product of the fall shall not rule or have dominion over you, BUT YOU shall rule and have dominion through Christ over it.
So are you taking that dominion? It’s yours and my inheritance in the kingdom, and love is the key to accessing every ounce of it. Because when man fell in the garden, the first thing we fell from was LOVE.
Reigning Through Encounter
Since God is love itself (1 John 4:8), to be created after God’s image means that His love was both our source of life as well as the very nature that we as humans initially took on as His offspring. We were created out of God’s love, for God’s love, with that very love being what defined our own nature, and it was in this state of being that we were given our created mandate to rule and subdue the earth (Genesis 1:26).
It was at the fall that every possible sin and negative effect of separation from God’s love (fear and anxiety, condemnation, shame and hiding, hatred of self and others, anger and rage, depression, low self-esteem, broken relationships, etc.) entered creation. BUT NOW, Jesus has died, risen and poured out His Spirit to remove sin and it’s effects from us and to RESTORE us in both relationship to God as well as in our very nature BACK to what the Father intended when He first formed and breathed life into us in the garden: restored intimacy with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and TOTAL freedom from sin and all destructive, bondage-ridden work of the enemy that once had the power to separate us from God. That wholeness and new nature once again reflecting God’s love belongs to us NOW by the blood of Christ and the Lord says that as we ask, it will be given to us (Ephesians 3:17 & 1:7, Matthew 7:7).
The ONLY way to put on our new nature of love and step into our destiny of authority is by spending time with the One who IS LOVE ITSELF.
We know from Romans 5:5 that God has given us the gift of Holy Spirit to minister God’s love to our hearts. In the place of encounter with Him, we receive the love that has power to set us free from all sin and effects of the fall. And in this place of encountering God as we behold the One who is Love Himself, we also become like Him (2 Cor. 3:18). So from this place of restored intimacy with God, we both receive the freedom Christ paid for us to have and can step into our new nature that perfectly reflects that of our holy and powerful Heavenly Father. For “As He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17).
Let Love Set You Free
Are there areas in your life where you are living overpowered by sin or darkness instead of reigning with God through His love? Love Himself desires to set you free and in authority in those places! God created you to be free and powerful, just like your Heavenly Dad so that you could live as a reflection of Him on the earth. If you have given your life to Jesus, you are a new creation remade in God’s image, and it is His desire that you walk in that love and the power that flows from it in every area of your life!
Take some time to invite Holy Spirit to show you any places in your life where He has greater freedom and authority for you, and begin to declare with heaven that you were created to rule over darkness and as Romans 6:14 says, sin or darkness shall no longer have dominion over you. Jesus paid the ultimate price for your freedom, and it is His deepest desire that it be the reality you walk in every day! Feel free to leave some feedback or share your story in the comments below.
